Day 2

Today's boggers are Janna Bellwin and Lisa Naumann.

Jesus was a carpenter and we all gave it a try today!

We started the day with our Morning Watch (a time of payer and reflection at 6:30 before breakfast) and the theme was "Experiences Shape Our Vision".  Certainly that was the case today.  We arrived for our first day at work to a new RHINO site which was an elevated foundation (in case of future flooding) and that was all.  Our mission is to frame the house this week.

This week's "before" picture on Green Street.

2 of us were given the task of building 8 U studs with 3 2X4s--sounds easy right?  For the first 3 hours we did 4--2 correctly and 2 "mistakes".  We were discouraged and asked for help.  John Bittner gave us some pointers, we practiced and managed to finish all 8 in the following 2 hours. We learned from each other and got to feel the satisfaction of hard work and accomplishment when later in the afternoon we placed our U structures in the frame on the foundation.

Our Habitat Site Supervisor Mike.

The unfinished deck system.

Glue Gun Debbie.

We easily went through five thousands nails today alone!

Most of us worked as carpenters, cutting, glueing, measuring and nailing the floor down and putting together the outside frames which will be raised tomorrow in a ceremony with the new owners.  Some of us even got to work the electric saw - woo-hoo!

We all enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of our fellow volunteers.  There was a team of young adults from Americorp.,  3 people from Colorado who were on vacation who volunteered for just for the day and a delightful woman from Dallas who has volunteered for Habitiat for 3 years and has now moved to New Orleans.

The finished decking.

The infamous U studs.

Trinity Episcopal once again provided lunch.

You need Kings and Jacks to make a window.

We ended our day with a delicious dinner of red beans and rice at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church with head chefs Jim and Bonnie!

And a PS from David -

And of course, all work and no play wouldn't make for an FPC Stamford trip.

It was a very fine day - beautiful weather, lots of work accomplished, good food, laughter and fellowship.  Please keep us in your prayers.  And vote for Creative Learning.

  1. Y'all are in my prayers. I wish I was there with you. What a joy to be able to have the homeowner and sponsor join in the wall raising.
